In 1931, the trawler Colinda hauled up a lump of peat from the Leman and Ower Banks, some forty kilometres off the Norfolk coast. Inside it was a barbed point of carved antler over eight inches long: a Mesolithic hunting weapon. Pollen analysis later showed it had been lost on dry land, not dropped from a boat. The seabed the Colinda was fishing had once been a country.
That find opens “Mapping a Vanished Landscape”, Jason Urbanus’s letter from Doggerland in Archaeology magazine: the clearest short account we know of what a century of trawling, dredging, and survey work has recovered from the floor of the southern North Sea. For anyone who wants to understand the ground this project stands on, it is required reading.
A century of evidence
The name is younger than the science. Bryony Coles of the University of Exeter coined “Doggerland” in the 1990s, but the material has been accumulating since the Colinda: nearly 2,000 barbed bone and antler points; stone arrowheads, axes, and adzes; an aurochs bone engraved with a zigzag design 13,000 years ago; a human jawbone, roughly 8,300 years old, from one of the last generations to live on the land before the sea closed over it.
Much of it still surfaces the ordinary way: in fishing nets, and in the sand Dutch engineers pump ashore for land reclamation. The drowned surface is starved of oxygen, so bone, antler, and worked wood survive in remarkable condition. From human remains, researchers can now recover DNA and isotope signatures: the sex, diet, and origins of individuals dead for eight millennia.
Reading the seabed like a landscape
The transformative work in Urbanus’s account belongs to Vince Gaffney and the Europe’s Lost Frontiers team at the University of Bradford. Their raw material is seismic reflection data, gathered by the petroleum industry to find oil and gas and donated to the archaeologists; not the industry’s usual gift to science, but a decisive one. Reprocessed, it reveals the buried Mesolithic land surface across some 44,000 square kilometres: river systems, dozens of lakes and estuaries, hills, valleys, and coastlines that no living person has ever seen.
The team has since taken the map to the trench. At a drowned river estuary, targeted coring recovered a fragment of hammerstone: the first time archaeologists have successfully prospected a deep-sea site rather than waiting for a trawler to deliver the evidence. What all of it describes is not a bleak land bridge that people trudged across but a destination in its own right: forests of oak, hazel, and elm; wetlands thick with fish, wildfowl, otters, and beavers. Luc Amkreutz of the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden calls it “a wetland wonderland”. Then, around eight thousand years ago, the Storegga slide sent a tsunami across the remaining lowlands, and the rising sea finished what the wave began.
An obligation, not an obstacle
Urbanus closes with a warning: the coming build-out of wind farms and cable corridors across the southern North Sea could destroy sites before anyone knows they exist, and archaeologists and developers need to be talking now.
We agree, and we intend to go further than talking. Nieuw Doggerland’s hub islands are planned for the heart of the ancient landscape, and the plan treats that as a founding responsibility rather than a permitting hurdle: a Lost Frontiers-style archaeological survey of the hub zone in Phase 1, protected subsea excavation sanctuaries written into the project’s fabric, and an Archaeology & Heritage Centre on the hub island to hold and interpret what they yield.
The Colinda’s point sat unexplained for years before pollen grains proved what it was: evidence of a drowned world. The next finds deserve better than a museum drawer; we intend to build them a homecoming.
