Wind Already Blows

The Dogger Bank is no arbitrary location. It is already home to the world's largest offshore wind farm: the 3.6 GW Dogger Bank Wind Farm, under construction now off the Yorkshire coast. Nieuw Doggerland's central hub sits at the heart of this generating zone, turning a field of turbines into an integrated energy island.

Where today's offshore wind exports raw electricity to a single shore, an island hub can do far more: convert surplus power to green hydrogen, balance and store it, and route it to whichever grid needs it most. The island becomes the junction box of the North Sea.

Offshore Wind Generation

New offshore generation built around the existing Dogger Bank array, with island foundations doubling as turbine and substation infrastructure in some of the windiest waters in Europe.

Green Hydrogen

Surplus wind power electrolyses seawater into green hydrogen on the island, giving the project a storable, shippable energy product and a buffer against the intermittency of wind.

Grid Interconnection

HVDC subsea cables tie the hub into both the UK and Dutch national grids, letting power flow to whichever market needs it: a pan-European interconnector delivered in partnership with TenneT.

Balancing & Storage

As an energy island rather than a single cable, the hub can store, convert, and dispatch energy, smoothing the peaks and troughs that make offshore wind hard to integrate at scale.

The North Sea is becoming the power plant of Northern Europe. Nieuw Doggerland gives it a place to stand.

How It Gets Built

From First Turbine
to Continental Grid

First generation and protected lagoons arrive with the central hub in Phase 2 (2029–2033). HVDC interconnection to the UK and Dutch grids follows in Phase 3 (2034–2040) as the archipelago extends toward both coasts.

The energy programme is designed hand-in-glove with TenneT, the transmission operator already pioneering North Sea energy islands, and with dredging and offshore-construction partners Boskalis and Van Oord. Financing is structured around the EU Innovation Fund, green bonds, and sovereign and corporate co-investment.
