A Frontier
for Discovery

Nieuw Doggerland is a living laboratory. Marine science, sustainable aquaculture, eco-tourism, and archaeology share one platform in the middle of the North Sea, and a new kind of binational institution to govern it.

Science, in the Middle of the Sea

At the centre is the Marine Science Research Station: a permanent, internationally staffed centre partnered with NIOZ, Cefas, and Plymouth Marine Laboratory. It runs continuous population monitoring, water-quality assessment, and seabed habitat mapping, and its data is open-access, underpinning the project's conservation claims and informing North Sea fisheries policy far beyond its own waters.

Around it, a frontier economy takes shape: low-impact aquaculture, eco-tourism, and a heritage research mission unlike anything attempted before.

Where Ideas Come Ashore

Marine Research Station

Resident NIOZ and Cefas scientists, a working hatchery, and open-access monitoring make Nieuw Doggerland the most closely studied marine recovery zone on Earth.

Sustainable Aquaculture

Shellfish and seaweed cultivation in protected lagoons: food production that restores rather than depletes, with no intensive finfish cages.

Eco-Tourism

A public aquarium, visitor centre, and dive programme make the sanctuary tangible, turning conservation into something people can see, touch, and explore.

Archaeology & Heritage Centre

Working with Cambridge's Europe's Lost Frontiers project, dedicated subsea zones excavate Mesolithic Doggerland, one of the most significant submerged landscapes on Earth.

A New Kind of Jurisdiction

The boldest experiment may be governance itself. Nieuw Doggerland is conceived as an autonomous binational province under joint UK–Netherlands stewardship, with its own maritime authority and a founding treaty that writes permanent ecological protection into constitutional law, beyond the reach of any single government's lobbying.

And on the outermost island, the frontier reaches all the way to orbit: a SpaceX-compatible spaceport, Europe's Gateway to Orbit.
